Samsung Will Allow Advertising in Apps!!!

Thank you everybody who has signed our petition: “Banner Ads on Bada Apps” ! Today we have received great news that Samsung will allow in-app advertising by the end of September! Here’s the response we have got (I highlighted some parts :-) ):

Dear badadevs,

We have read about your concerns regarding advertising within bada apps
on badadev.com.

Our core focus as platform provider is to make bada developers happy,
and we have come to an agreement to speed up the process of allowing
advertising within the apps
to support developers better.

However, because this involves several legal issues, we need to make
sure that our current terms and conditions do not have any problems. We
hope this will not take too long and expect we should be able to start
approving applications with advertising towards the end of Sept.

We truly appreciate your thoughts and concerns to support bada
developers better and look forward to more insights.

Sincerely,

Samsung bada Team

Great news for developers of free apps! :-)

By the way, I hope all of you have already noticed that the SDK is out of beta. Download SDK v.1.0.0 today!

    That very nice to hear

I like the way Samsung is working, very professional

If we continue like this, Bada can become the best OS in shorter timer.

It’s great that Samsung is working with Devs. This policy will lead them very far and bring us the best mobile platform ever!

New SDKs are fine, but with those installed it seems that Widget plugin isn’t working anymore. So unless Samsung will place new Widget API update, we won’t be able to make widgets with SDK 1.0 :/.

Well, seems good news Samsung is listening to us devs.
However, I must confess I’m still not convinced ads should be part of applications.
Indeed, if embedded ads has proven to be effective for advertisers and ad platforms, it still hasn’t proven to be of interest for developers.
I would rather the users to pay 1€ or 2€, which is still affordable, rather than putting ads, downgrading user experience and getting only a few cents out of thousands views !

More, embedded ads are a good pretext for users to expect only free apps, like on android.

IMHO there should be an option in Bada OS Settings for disabling Ads in Bada applications. Personally I hate ads and spam and I’m strongly against them.

As for what I said about 1.0 SDK and Widget plugin: after reinstalling the plugin, everything works as it should :) .

You can argue about the user experience! It depends on the app! For some apps users prefer to see a small banner instead of paying a few bucks.

At least half of our projects on android and iphone are free ads-supported apps. Most of them are by far more profitable then their corresponding paid versions (we usually release two versions: a paid one and a free one with ads).

Let the users decide! As a developer release two versions and let the user chose what he prefers!

Nice to see Samsung working together with the developers =)

    @reshep

What You’ve described is a ransom type policy made by Google – “either You pay me and have no ads or let them bother You free of charge”. Developers should either create freeware apps or software (for which they’re being paid). Ads should be on developer site or in Samsung App Store (as they’re now).

In general I am also against ads in applications, because it downgrades user-experience by alot, also because screen space is very limited on mobiles. But I can fully understand and appreciate the aim of ads, which allow high-quality apps to actually be free. The idea of creating two versions (ad-supported and ad-free paid-app) seems very legitimate to me.

An article with information of ads in apps for developers would be very helpful I think, at least to me, as a very greenhorn rookie.

    @Mal Loth

Good software takes a lot of resources to develop. It’s a business as any other. As in any business, success is measured by consumer acceptance. And by the money they are willing to pay.

I do not see anything wrong by offering consumers a choice. It’s like a choice between public and private TV. One is free with ads, other is paid without ads.

By our statistics from other platforms I can tell you that there are roughly 200-times more consumers willing to download a version with ads instead of paying $1.99 . Go figure. Each person knows himself what his best “user-experience” is.

There is no “ransom policy”. I am not an IT student with endless quantities of time. I have to pay my bills. I cannot spend two month development time for a free app, just to have it on the market. Developers need to get paid, if they want to do this professionally. The more monetization choices there are, the better the business will be and the better quality apps will become.

If developers are successful, users will get more and better quality apps. Everybody’s happy!

As far as Samsung is concerned, I think they have made a very good decision. It would be even better if Samsung could offer a rent-an-app monetization possibility. Where users could pay per-use or per-week.

I am with reshep on this one.

I think choice is a good thing. Let developers choose, let users choose. The more choices there are, the more the whole system will benefit!

If some choices prove to be bad, the market will show it! E.g. if no users downloaded apps with banner ads, then developers would simply look for other monetization possibilities. As simple as that! Problem solved – no arguing!

    It’s evolution!

On the other hand, the more you try to control (like by offering only one way of monetization), the weaker and less flexible the growth will be.

I’m an old type dev – no Facebook, no Twitter, no Spam, no Ads = no problems in the feature :) . As for the option itself, I’ve got nothing against it, unless it will fill the SAS (Samsung AppStore) with ad-apps (means only such kind of apps). And believe it or not, my intuition knows best that if You’ll allow it, this will happen and the SAS will fall (as reshep said – many users are unwilling to pay a penny for an app therefore those who would will be discouraged by ad-apps). But that’s my opinion and You are free to tell me Yours :) – I respect that.
